  • the MHRA has advised all manufacturers of electric wheelchairs/mobility scooters that use lithium batteries in their devices to implement additional safety features in order to prevent future fatalities or injuries caused by lithium battery fires.

    Given a case in the UK in 2024 where improper use of lithium battery chargers for electric wheelchair products resulted in a fatal accident,

    customers of UK manufacturers involved in electric wheelchairs and mobility scooter-related products have recently received notification emails from the UK MHRA Vigilance Group, in which the MHRA has advised all manufacturers of electric wheelchairs/mobility scooters that use lithium batteries in their devices to implement additional safety features in order to prevent future fatalities or injuries caused by lithium battery fires.

    In the letter, the MHRA has recommended that relevant manufacturers complete the following safety improvements:

    1、It is recommended that manufacturers add additional warning labels to the batteries and chargers,  clearly stating the fire hazard or other warnings regarding the use of unauthorized battery chargers;

    2、Manufacturers are advised to reassess the safety and performance of their lithium battery-powered devices by ensuring compliance with the latest requirements outlined in the "BS ISO 7176-31:2023" standard for electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters. The standard, which covers lithium-ion battery systems and chargers, includes detailed safety requirements and testing methods to ensure reliable device performance. We urge all involved manufacturers to take this matter seriously and implement the necessary measures to proactively comply with the UK MHRA’s requirements.
