  • Swissmedic is preparing to launch Swissdamed

Following the breakdown of the bilateral framework agreement between Switzerland and the European Union (EU), Swissmedic is preparing to launch Swissdamed, a Swiss registry database that will cover economic operators and medical device registrations.

Swissmedic announced in 2023 that the economic operator and medical device registration module of the database would be launched and opened in early January 2024 and mid-June 2024 respectively, but according to the latest official notification, these time points have been postponed.

According to Swissmedic, the Swiss medicines agency, the functional development of the first ACT model has been completed. Work on the UDI module is ongoing. Swissdamed will operate directly in the Swissmedic Cloud.

The development of this IT infrastructure, and the associated transfer of Swissdamed, has pushed the "go live" date to the second half of 2024.

Until then, established channels will continue to be used for registration and information updating of economic operators.

The launch of Swissdamed will provide a more convenient and transparent channel for economic operators and medical device registration, help to improve the supervision and management level of the Swiss medical device industry, and help domestic manufacturers better grasp the market dynamics and regulatory requirements.
